Peroxide-Free

I'm enjoying the inundation of Nich Lackey photos on the Internet right now for one reason, and one reason only: I think it's absolutely hilarious that in almost every one he sports a telltale thatch of bleached blonde curls on one shoulder or the other like a frizzy yellow epaulette. You can almost see the reflection of Jessica's gigantic flourescent teeth washing out the corresponding side of his scruffy face with a most unflattering light.

When large egos are involved, love always gets its ass kicked. I fall back on the Kenneth Branagh-Emma Thompson model. It was bad enough when she won the Oscar for Howard's End, but when she bookended it with Best Adapted Screenplay for Sense and Sensibility, you just knew that marriage was doomed.

And those are two certifiably brilliant people. Replace them in the model with a couple of pretty, vacuous people, one of whom is perhaps only marginally more talented than the other but much prettier (because clearly that's the more important virtue among the LCDs), and it's like watching a guy turn around just in time to see the grill of the cement truck before it slams into him.

First, I loved that screenplay, and Emma's mild and steady Elinor. Poor Kenneth only seems to get nominations.

Your ego theory is going in my research manual of what makes marriages implode (a cynical activity, sure, but generally useful fiction fodder). It's such a tiringly recurring theme, my favorite example being Funny Farm.

Vacuous, by the way, is the perfect word.

It's one of my favorites. A few years ago I briefly dated a girl who was at that time obsessed with 'v' words, and we volleyed vocabulary back and forth — vertiginous, verve, vascular, vanquish, vehement, vagrant, vitriolic, vituperative. Sadly, it wasn't enough to base a relationship on. In short order, she stopped returning my calls, then vanished altogether.

One is tempted to lob back with a string of 'v' words... among my favorites are voluptuous, vixen, vertigo, voracious. So many 'v' words are elegant and dark and rather naughty.

Sounds to me like you really know how to pick 'em.
